Yee-haw! It’s time to go Western!
Today I have the pleasure of hosting New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Linda Broday. Linda and I met when she invited me to be a guest on her blog. And now that I set up my own blog a few weeks ago, I can return the favor. I love Linda’s writing and I was super excited to finally meet her in person at last year’s Romantic Times® Convention!
We dove right in and became roommates with another author friend, E.E. Burke. I’ve never laughed so much as I have with these ladies while sharing a convention’s delights and challenges (including the quest for a morning cup of coffee) 😉 ☕
Linda has a new re-release and she’s kindly offered to do a Book Giveaway here! One copy of KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS (print or ebook, winner’s choice) to a commenter on this blog. I’ll draw the winner’s name at the end of the day on Sunday, August 13th.
And now, here’s Linda…
I’m so excited! The re-release of KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS is out! Oh man, I’m glad to get it back into readers’ hands again. This story that first released in 2002 was inspired by a true event in my childhood so it’s very dear to my heart.
After losing his wife and son in childbirth, Duel McClain leaves and starts drifting from town to town, not caring if he lives or dies. He rides into a Texas border town, ties up at the hitching rail, and saunters into the saloon. He spies a card table and sits down to play poker. When the opponent across from him runs out of money, he reaches for a baby on the floor. He plops her down in the center of the table and announces that the winner of the hand gets the baby too.
Duel wins with aces ’n eights—the Deadman’s hand. But he doesn’t need another responsibility. He can barely take care of himself so he tries to give the baby girl back. The man snarls that he’ll sell her before dark. Duel won’t let that happen so he tucks her against him and leaves.
He wrestles with to do with her and finally decides the best solution is to go back to the piece of land he’d abandoned.
On the way, he runs across a woman in shock, covered in blood. She’s wanted for murder but he can see scars of abuse and knows she’s no threat. He strikes a deal—he’ll take her anywhere she wants to go in exchange for help with the baby.
But how long do they have before the law catches up with her and she faces the hangman’s rope that’s waiting?

As I said, this story was inspired by a childhood event. When I was young, I used to play with a girl next door. We found out the man and woman weren’t her parents at all and that he had won her in a poker game. She used to cry and tell me that one day she was going to find her real mother and father and ask them why they couldn’t love her. The couple she lived with gave her a horrible, unsafe home. The man didn’t work and was drunk every single day of his life. I can’t imagine how much she suffered beyond the verbal abuse I heard. I promised myself that one day I’d give her the happy ending she never got even if it was in fiction. Somehow, I think she’d be pleased.
This is the first book of a series called Texas Heroes. Book #2 comes out in February and Book #3 in May when the baby Marley Rose is grown and learns the truth. I hope you’ll try them.

BIO:
I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of full length historical western romance novels and short stories. Watching TV westerns during my youth fed my love of cowboys and the old West and they still do. I reside in the Texas Panhandle on land the American Indian and Comancheros once roamed and I can feel their ghosts lurking around each corner. Texas is rich in history and I often get lost when I go exploring it, looking for little known tidbits to add realism to my stories. I might as well confess that quite often I make a nuisance of myself at museums and libraries.

Thanks for joining me, Linda! I love your books, but KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS is one that I somehow missed reading. I’m definitely in for a treat with this story and with book 2 & 3 coming out next year! ❤
Don’t forget to leave a comment below for a chance to win one copy of KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS (print or ebook, winner’s choice). The winner’s name will be drawn at the end of the day on Sunday, August 13th.

Hi Jacqui!!! I’m so excited to be here on this beautiful blog page. It’s really outstanding but I’m not surprised. Graphics is an area you excel in. Knight on the Texas Plains was my first published book and it was out of print for a long while. I was overjoyed when Sourcebooks Publishing decided to re-issue these older titles. This is Book #1 of my Texas Heroes series. Book #2 The Cowboy Who Came Calling releases in Feb. The publisher I had at the time back when these first came out folded before I got to write that 3rd one so the best part about these re-issues is that Sourcebooks wanted me to write Book #3. It will be out next year in May 2018. The third one is about baby Marley Rose in this story when she’s all grown up and discovers the secret of being won in a poker game. She’s shattered and feels her entire life has been a lie. So she struggles to come to terms with everything. I think it’s one of the most powerful books I’ve ever written.
Thank you again for hosting me. We did have some fun times at RT. So much laughing. And yes, getting that morning cup of coffee was a struggle in itself. Love you, lady! I’m glad you included that picture of the three of us.
“The Cowboy Who Came Calling” was the first book of yours that I read, and I adored Glory May and her story! So glad we became friends and that you are here today on my new blog. And now…it’s time to rustle up a cup of coffee and start my morning 😊
My review for this amazing book was:
Yet another great read from Linda Broday! I was fortunate to have won this book and to have received it the day before the release date. You will fall in love with a baby girl named Marley Rose that tends to make everyone she comes across fall in love with her. Well except her scoundrel of a father that had put her up as a bet in a poker game.
Duel McClain was the unwitting Cowboy that won Marley and he considered not taking his winning with him but he couln’t leave the little tike with the likes of the father. Little did he know what a blessing she would be especially when he first left that saloon headed out on the trail not knowing one thing about babies. Their first night at a campfire headed home to have his sister raise the baby, low and behold a blooded woman turns up and passes out right in front of him.
Jessie Foltry is on the run. It turns out the blood isn’t hers but Duel has no idea who’s blood it is and what happened. Duel offers Jessie a deal for his protection. She promised to help care for Marley. Even though Jessie isn’t sure she can trust Duel, what other option does she have? How long could she survive alone, on the run and with no money.
You will be completely taken in by these three and will have a hard time putting the book down. This book by Linda Broday will grab you on the first four pages with a plot that you have to know what is going to happen. Broday has quite a story to tell you about the three main characters and how their lives together play out. A must read!
This book will go down as one of my all-time favorites, don’t miss it!
Thanks for visiting and posting your awesome review! Definitely, as you say, “a must read”
